Whether you have not had a massage before or have had one and never knew how it benefits you, below is some helpful information on the benefits of massage.
THE BENEFITS OF MASSAGE
There are many benefits to receiving a regular massage. Massage in conjunction with regular spinal manipulation treatments offers a drug-free, non invasive and humanistic approach based on the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
BENEFITS
Increases circulation, allowing the body to pump more oxygen and nutrients into your tissues and vital organs
Stimulates the flow of lymph, the body’s natural defense system, against toxic invaders
Relaxes and softens injured and overused muscles
Reduces spasms and cramping
Increases joint flexibility
Reduces recovery time, helps prepare for strenuous workouts and eliminates subsequent pains of the athlete at any level
Releases endorphins (the body’s natural painkiller) aiding in healing injuries and recovery from surgery to control and relieve pain
Reduces post-surgery adhesions and edema and can be used to reduce and realign scar tissue after healing has occurred
Improves range-of-motion and decreases discomfort for patients with low back pain
Relieves pain for migraine sufferers and decreases the need for medication
MASSAGE FEQUENCY
Your body feels wonderful after a massage, but how long that bliss lasts depends on the state of your body. If you are suffering from chronic pain or recovering from injury, it may take more sessions and perhaps different modalities before optimal health is restored. Your massage therapist or chiropractor will work with you to determine the best course of action.
In dealing with general tension of everyday commutes, computer work, and time demands, a monthly massage may be enough to sustain you.
In general, experts say “regular” is preferable, but how regular depends on your situation. It is best to maintain a schedule. By maintaining a schedule your body becomes conditioned and prepared for your next maintenance massage.
MAINTENANCE
Whether you get a massage weekly, monthly, or just every once in a while, the following habits can maximize and extend the afterglow of treatment:
Water – One bit of advice you’ll hear over and over again is to drink plenty of water. This is a must, as the massage releases toxins, such as lactic acid and carbonic acid, which needs to be flushed from the body. Massage also promotes circulation, increasing blood flow and oxygen and stimulating the lymphatic system, which helps rid the body of pathogens. After massage hydration supports these functions, helping to eliminate released impurities, sooner rather than later.
Exercise – Working out can also help maintain the benefits of massage, and this habit should be continually cultivated. One exception is that if you are receiving massage therapy to help speed muscle strain recovery, you may need to ease up on exercise for a while to give your body time to heal.
Body Awareness – After a massage, respect how your body feels. If your body wants rest, honor its request. Don’t allow yourself to get fatigued because it will undermine the effects of massage. Be sure to get sufficient sleep to allow the body to absorb the effects and regain vitality.
Diet – Finally, after ridding the body of toxins, support it’s renewed state by adhering to a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables. This will continue the detoxification process.
Our office provides specific massage and muscular therapy that is tailored to meet the patient's condition and injury.
